Intro
This is the third version in my quest to fix some old Metacreations products. For people interested in the history, take a look at The first Painter Fix and the First Generic Metacreations Fix
This version solves an additional problem "Tiles: Out of Tiles" error and it will also work when Painter is installed on a 64 bit OS.
To find out why you were receiving the "Not enough memory" problem, take a look at the previous pages referenced earlier. The "Out of Tiles" problem was caused by a similar issue. For some reason Painter wanted to determine if there was still enough memory available on the system, so they asked Windows for the available memory. However, the return value from that call was improperly evaluated (way back when the program was written, the evaluation was properly good enough, but it dramatically fails with larger systems).
Therefore I wrote another variant of the fix that not only fools the executable about the pagefile size but does the same for free memory, etc ... in such a way that the executable would never know in case more than 1 Gb of memory is available. The benefit is that you will be able to use all resources at your disposal, and the program will still work correctly.
I would like to know if the fix works for
other programs then mentioned so far, so please leave a note below if you find another product not mentioned on this page.
Download
You can download the zip file here.
If this works for you and you find it worthwhile, feel free to donate something for it using Paypal or your credit card. Just to give you an idea, most people donate between 5 and 10 USD, 4 and 8 Euro or 700 and 1400 Yen.
Installation
Step by Step Installation Instructions
I've had a lot of question for people who needed a more detailed step by step installation guide. I hope this section will be clear to everyone on how to get the fix installed.
Upgrading from a previous fix
If you already have an older fix installed then you will notice the model has changed from modifying the filename New_PClassic.exe and then launching that executable.
The "fixit" method I'm introducing now actually modifies the target executable. Hopefully this makes it easier for people to use it. However, there is one downside and that is that this fix will have to be reapplied every time you install a patch for your favorite program (although it's very unlikely we will still see patches for those programs, except the patches I'm providing).
Therefore, you can remove your "New_PClassic" program from the old patch after installing this patch.
Also, it's completely useless to patch the New_PClassic.exe file or so ... just follow the instructions above and you should be fine!
Fill in the captcha and the blanks below to add a comment. The only mandatory field is the "comments". Thanks!

Here you go....Tajul Fuad is my childhood friend. We have befriended ever since I was in primary school back in 1990+.We grew up together in the same house area in Bukit Chedang with other several kids. Alhamdulillah, I had the chance to cover Tajul’s engagement with his lovely fiancee Hawa at the Saujana Kuala Lumpur last Saturday. It was a beautiful ceremony with few VIPs like Dato’ K and wife Dato’ Siti, Datuk Fadzillah Kamsah as well as the TV3’s CEO and many others. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to congratulate both of you and may Allah bless you through the life with mawadah, mahabbah and rahmah.

After installing this patch, when I tried to save a file in Painter Classic I got an error message that there was insufficient disc space on C: even though of course I had plenty. I was able to save the file to a camera card in a USB card reader, though, and after doing that, for some reason I was able to save it to C: as well, and saves have continued to work fine since then. Just thought I'd mention this as something people can try if they get the same message.

Many thanks for this.. Fontographer is a program I use once in a blue moon - but when you need it (in this case to adapt a backwards font for a Space Invader cabinet project where everything is vertical & backwards..) it's invaluable.. thanks for the lease of life, and the clear instructions. Cheers.

So I tried this for Windows 7 with no luck. Installed it correctly, but I am still getting the not enough memory error.
I tried using their compatibility settings, to windows xp and it works but I get no pressure sensitivity which make the program totally unusable for me.
I have commissions coming up and would be super happy if this program worked. As it is, I think I have way less hair than I started out with.

Excellent work...I am using Painter 6.1 on the PC (Win XP) and I dont like the newer versions of Painter.
I was getting the out of memory and tiles message a fair bit...and I had to resort to drive backups.
I applied your patch when Painter was down (that is whenever I opened it, it showed the above error)
Now it WORKS!!!
AWESOME JOB!!
Thanks you

I couldn't wait for a response to my previous comment/question. I installed Metacreations Art Dabbler and went ahead and tried fixit with a brand new HP 3.3 GHz dual core CPU with, 4.0 Gb of RAM and Windows XP SP3. It worked like a charm. I especially appreciated your Step by Step Installation Instructions. They made it clear what was going on; much more so than when I tried it 2 years ago. Thank you. Bravo zulu as we say in the Navy.

Tried your original fix 2 years ago, but couldn't make it solve out of memory problem in Art Dabbler. However, found (in 2006) that reducing initial and max size of virtual memory to 756 and 1512 meg allowed Art Dabbler to run without compatibility mode. In this school, newer (2007) HP computers won't run Art Dabbler with any of various virtual memory settings that I tried.
Only difference seems to be that the 2007 computers went to dual core Intel CPU. (2006 was single core.) So I suspect the issue is the cache memory used for buffers.
Do you think your Metacreations Fixit will solve my problem with the HP business desktops with 1.0 gb RAM and dual core CPU?

I have not yet downloaded your fix because I have a question first.
I wish to load and use ArtDabbler2 (was Fractal's at the time), on my newer Laptop HP Pavilion Notebook PC. I have been using it on my much older Gateway PC Windows2000NT.
1) I will need to get a serial to USB adaptor for the ArtPad--I have found some on the internet.
2) I will need to install ArtDabbler2; I still have the disk et al.
3) I will need to download and install your patch.
My questions are:
1. Is it better to download and activate the patch FIRST then load ArtDabbler2?
2. Or is it better to try and load ArtDabbler2? BTW I haven't tried for sometime but I recall it said something about not being supported.
3. The old computer and the laptop are networked, albeit oddly, through a router centered on an even newer Vista machine (yeah that was fun to set up, but onward).
Would it be best to try and load the ArtDabbler via sharing between the old computer and the laptop?
If you could give me the order and point me to corrections of what weirdnes is expected to occur that would be wonderful.
This whole website and your efforts to save us Dabblers is just "awesome great dude". Really, much appreciated. Even I can't get it to work, it gives me hope. Thanks.

I have tried to install this a few times and On a Dell T3400 Dual-Core w/2gb of ram and using WinXP Pro, I have still had problems. I uninstalled the app and got rid of the MetaCreations folder all together, and then reinstalled it fresh. I then updated it to 6.1, and moved the files from the new fix into the Dir., but when I run the install in the Command Prompt, or just by dragging and dropping the app onto the fix (which seems to do the trick), I finally get an error telling me that the PAINTER6.RSR file cannot be found or opened. This is after trying the work around twice, as well as right clicking the \"My Computer and resetting the Virtual Memory to 500Mb and restarting\"..
Got anything else that works?
Curiously enough, An Apple Macbook 2Ghz Dualcore w/ 2gb under bootcamp did not have any of these problems with painter under XP Pro. I just installed it normally, updated it with corel\'s updaters, and it worked! -I wonder what holds it up on a full Windows piece of Hardware..??

Thanks a lot. I think this is the reason I've never used Painter before, though I've had it since I bought my tablet years ago. Probably before Google was around, at least that'd explain why I couldn't fix it ;)

Yesterday, my wife wanted to use Fractal Design Dabbler2, which she hadn't used for quite a few years (and a few generations of computers and Windows). It apparently installed properly on our current computer, running Windows XP. However, it failed to start with "Not enough memory".
After a bit of surfing, I found Geert's fix, applied it and thought I had the problem licked. It now starts and most operations seem to work; however, the most useful, freehand drawing, doesn't. I tried Windows 95 compatibility mode and reinstallation, but neither of those helped.
Has anyone gotten Fractal Design Dabbler2, with Geert's fix, to work on Windows XP?
Thanks for any help.

This patch tool looks great, but there may be a far simpler fix:
Simply going to the "Compatibility" tab in the program shortcut and choose to run the exe in Windows 95 compatibility mode.
This works flawlessly for me on my 4 Gig Vista system.

I'm running Vista with plenty of memory. I installed Painter 5.5 with your fix on a Windowns XP computer and had no problems. I tried your last fix on Windows Vista, but I got:
Error: Couldn't back up Painter5.exe to Painter5.exe~: 5
Error: Couldn't install Painter5.exe# as Painter5.exe: 183

Hi Geert,
the patch worked fine for my Art Dabbler 2.1, but it took sometime to work out what I should be doing, I had trouble (as an average everyday PC user with only basic knowledge) understanding some things.
Having cracked it now it's simply a matter of wording.
I was getting the 'fixit' not valid command - until I realised I didn't have it in the art dabbler folder
I was also thrown off the track by thinking that when I had downloaded all I had to do was click on the 'fixit' icon that was included in the download - that produced a dialogue box that caused all my problems
I read the points made in the dialogue box and wrongly believed I had to do some of the things it said - such as change the artdab.exe file name (artdab.exe.exe)
This part was confusing.
I uninstalled and removed manually the Corel & Art Dabbler folders, re-installed and followed your guidelines - WITHOUT clicking on the 'fixit' icon as I had done previously
Then it all made sense, especially once I had used the DIR command after I had switched to the Art Dabbler folder - cd C:\Program Files\Corel\Art Dabbler 2.1
Once I saw the same screen that you have showing in your guidelines it all clicked and it worked fine.
Many thanks.

I'm running Vista and have 4 Megs of ram. Oddly enough, when I first got my computer this summer, Painter Classic ran fine, but I had to change the motherboard and it hasn't run since. I tried your last fix, but I got:
Error: Couldn't back up PClassic.exe to PClassic.exe~: 5
Error: Couldn't install PClassic.exe# as PClassic.exe: 183
I tried installing your first fix because someone said it had worked for them, but I got a virus alert! (When I tried to download your 2 first fixes actually.)

Dear Geert, very many thanks for your detailed instructions, Painter 5 is working now!
But at first as I worked exactly with your instructions and typed "fixit Painter 5.0.exe" I got the following bug report: "Painter: Couldn't open input file: Painter, error: 2" and "5.0exe: Couldn't open input file: 5.0.exe, error: 2". When I connected the words "Painter" and "5.0" to "Painter5.0" I got the same error 2.
I found the mistake myself as follows: I looked under BOOT C: /All Programs/ Painter 5.0 for the exe file and found the name "PAINTER5.EXE". Then I corrected the Command Prompt in the following way: "fixit PAINTER5.EXE" (instead of "fixit Painter 5.0.exe").
That was the solution! But as I started Painter 5 for the first time, I got the following Error: Exeption Processing Message c0000013 Parameters 75b0bf9c 4 75b0bf9c 75b0bf9c. But when I clicked that window away Painter started nevertheless and it works.
Maybe that description can help other people with error 2. I for myself am lucky and very thankful for Geerts wonderful patch. Peter from Munich in Germany

Geert,
Many thanks for all the effort you have put in. I am still lost !!!!! I've done everything as directed and I can see the files in the command directory box but I cannot get the command "fixit" to be accepted. I can see from other comments that several people have had the same problem (Senju). Any ideas ?
Many thaks,

I think, Senju from Japan had the same problem, and Geert gave him more detailed instructions via email. Please, could I get the same instructions? Here follows, what Senju has written:

REPLY TO JOE BELOW: Dear Joe, what a coincidence, I happened to re-visit this page from the very helpful Geert on the day you left your query. I didn't know how to open a command prompt either, but Googling "how to open command prompt in Vista" helped instantly. (Of course, if you don't have Vista, you would need to substitute your own operating system. In Vista's case, the answer is simply to right-click on your -- in this case -- Fontographer folder while holding down the shift key. One of the lines will now read "Open Command Window here.")

Hi Geert, from the comments on this page I am happy to see your fix seems to work for Fontographer. Now excuse me for being such a noob, but I guess I need more specific instructions on events from how to "open a command prompt". I have opened the zip you provided in the program folder and so I now have a new folder in there with your files in it but I don't understand what to do next.
Could you please send me more detailed instructions on how to proceed? I'd be happy to make a donation when I get Fontographer to work again.
Thanks for your time and groeten,

I have tried this fix on Metacreations Art Dabbler on a Lenovo computer running Windows XP Pro SP3 version 2002. The program runs just fine, but I am having difficulty printing...the dialog box says \'sending art dabbler sketch to print spooler\" and the program freezes. We also are getting messages that there are memory problems and program crashes. Should I use a previous fix version?
I am also running it on an MPC transport, with XP Pro SP 2 Version 2002 with no problems.

Thank you, Geert. You\'ve obviously helped a good many people, and I hoped to be one of them. I first tried with your first fix, which did not work. I then decided to try your latest one, and I received the following message in my command prompt:
\"Adding intercept.dll to binary files. PClassic.exe: Couldn\'t open input file: PClassic.exe, error 2.\" Naturally, my heart sank; to have come so close and yet to be so far..!
I then decided to try your previous fix (\"First Generic Metacreations Fix\"), but my Avast anti-virus program sent off alarm bells with \"Win32:Trojan-gen.\" (A googling of this one tells us it has caused headaches.) I read your comments in response to others who had come across this infection, and I believed you when you stated this was a false positive. But at the last minute, I chickened out and couldn\'t go through with the attempt. (As I\'m just coming out of a system recovery in my Vista computer, with an infection that corrupted my system files.)
At any rate, should you have a suggestion as to how I might be able to get around this bugaboo that I encountered, I\'d certainly be grateful.

I have now found the reason that caused the strange behavior of the Painter Classic as to the pencil 2B. It was caused by an erroneous setting by me. I had set the Wacom Tablet to mouse mode instead of pen mode. This resulted in these strange troubles for more than a week. Now everything works fine. Excuse me.
Hans Jakob Foenstelien
Grimstad, Norway - 2008-04-02 05:04:30
A strange error: I have installed Painter Classic with your remedy for it as to Win. XP. I mostly use the 2B pencil when drawing. I use a wireless Wacom pen. Within a short time after starting the pencil stops to function for 2B while it still can function for rubber- or the pen- symbol for some time. If I use the 2B's Size function the width of 2B's trace is shown exactly in the mid of the picture I am drawing. Then I can identify the exact midpoint. If I put the point of the wireless pen exactly at that midpoint and clic the pen's upper contact then the pen will begin to function for a while. To me it seems as if the pen "finds back its point". I have reinstalled Painter Classic once with your remedy and tried out both the Wacom Tabelet and the original Painter Classic. These two latter programs are not causing this error.

I am using windows XP. I installed Painter 5.0.0.
I downloaded the folder metacreations_x64.fix.zip
I unzipped to C:Program FilesPainter 5.0
I tried to run fixit.exe and I received a security message from my PC-cilling anti-virus program saying that the publisher could not be verified
It says that the file fixit.exe does not have a valid digital signature that verifies its publisher
I run the file fixit.exe anyway and a black screen flashed but did not stay steady. I tried again but it did not even flashed so I was unable to instal fixit.exe
Do you have any comments?
(LONG) COMMENT FROM GEERT>
Did you follow the instructions on the website?
- After unpacking the zip file in the place where Painter is installed, you should do the following:
- Start a command prompt (cmd.exe) in windows
(Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt)
- Then you have to change directory (cd) to the location where the Painter Program is installed - and where you unzipped the fix (for example cd c:Program FilesPainter 5.0)
- Then you have to locate the executable that runs Painter (do not know how it is called in your case, but I assume Painter5.exe).
- Then you run : fixit Painter5.exe (or whatever the name of the painter executable is)
Now, just start Painter like you normally do and it should work

In response to Jaki's comment about losing the pressure sensitivity. I used the generic fix to get my Fractal Painter 5.0 running again and I too have lost the pressure sensitivity.
COMMENT FROM GEERT> I heard about people loosing pressure sensitivity, however this is something the fix has nothing to do with.
The solution for that problem was to revert to Wacom drive 4.77 and the problem disappeared with no loss in functionality.
