THIS IS AN OLD FIX ...
AN UPDATED VERSION CAN BE FOUND BY FOLLOWING THE LINK ON THE MAIN PAGE
Intro
I think metacreations has written more programs that are suffering from
exactly the same "not enough memory" problem as described
here.
"Poser 4" and "Painter 5" and "Painter 6" have the same issue as Painter
Classic.
Therefore I wrote a variant of the fix for Painter Classic that could
fool any executable into thinking the system has 512Mb of memory (as long as the
executable fetches that data through "GlobalMemoryStatus"
I would like to know if the fix works for
other programs, so please leave a note below if you find another product not
mentioned on this page.
Download
Warning: A more recent fix has been made available ... check the
main page under development projects
You can download the zip file here.
If this works for you and you find it worthwhile, feel free to donate something for it using Paypal or your credit card. Just to give you an idea, most people donate between 5 and 10 USD, 4 and 8 Euro or 700 and 1400 Yen.
Installation
Unzip the zip file in the installation directory of the program you wish to
"fix". The zip file contains two files "New_PClassic.exe" and "intercept.dll"
You will have to rename the executable "New_PClassic.exe" to make it work for
the metacreations product you wish to fix.
The format of the exe filename is "<PREFIX>_<TARGET>.exe" where
- PREFIX is anything you wish to name it (just make sure it doesn't
contain an '_' character). I just used "New" as a prefix, but you can
replace that with "whatever you like".
- TARGET is the program that needs to be fixed (this is the executable as
defined in the shortcut usually). For Painter Classic, this is
PClassic (because you normally execute PClassic.exe through the shortcut)
For example: If the executable name is "Poser4.exe", you have to rename "New_PClassic.exe"
to "New_Poser4.exe".
Now double click your "New_<....>.exe" and see if it works!
If it does work, please check if this fix has been reported to work below.
If you are the first to try it, please drop me an email (dev at depeuter "."
org) and provide the details so I can complete the table below.
Reported Programs this will fix
These are the programs that this fix have been reported to work with.
The executable name is provided for your information to help you figure out what
to rename the New_PClassic.exe in the zip file to. For example, for Poser
you have to rename New_PClassic.exe to New_Poser.exe (because the executable
name of Poser is Poser.exe)

What about the binary patch
For the Painter Classic program, I went through the exercise of providing a binary patch, however, providing a generic
binary patch will be very difficult, unless the patch is verified to work and
fix the correct problem in every version of the program it is patching.
Anyway, I think the patch provided above will be a sufficient workaround for
being able to run you programs ... and that's what it's all about.
On the other hand, I have a feeling the binary patching of ASI32_12.dll will
work just the same for all versions of Painter and Poser ... so for the brave,
try to apply the binary patch as explained on the
Painter Classic fix page.

Sorry Im such a dense person but I've tried several times to install this generic fix.
Not even certain I have the real installation directory file open, I have the PAINTERC file from the installation disk of a now defunct wacom pad.
However there seems to be no file to be found any where Ive searched, ending in exe. Which REALLY baffles me.
Also what file(s), located where, am I supposed to rename?
I have used Painter Classic for so long it is like my right hand got lopped off not being able to use it.
I'm sure there is something obvious and simple I am over-looking, but I make art, I dont understand the paths of functionality in software at all.
And I am very desperate for a fix... Can you help me help myself?

** Unsafe download?**
Norton Internet Security flags this site as a risk due to a Trojan in the download. On downloading the zip file, generic_fix.zip, Norton reported that it had found and deleted a Trojan. Unfortunately I don't feel brave enough to try the file even though cleaned.

I think what you've done for all the Painter users is great!
I on the other hand have an even older version that gives the same error. I have The older Fractal Painter 3.1 running on Win XP with 1GB RAM. Well... susposed to any ways. Also gives me the Not enough memory error. Used to work fine on another Win XP box (512MB RAM) until I upgraded the mother board CPU and mem. We bought it not too long after Win 95 was released... am I giving away my age by any chance here?!... I now only have a 1GB mem module so I can't break it in half.
If I email you the necessary install files (quite small) is there a possibility that you could make a fix for it?
I did try your very first fix but it gave me an error that says something about not being able to get the handle (incorrect handle) or something like that.
So I figured perhaps if I give you the exe etc. then you could perhaps fix it?
I'm propbably asking a bit much... right?

Yep - it work - have to temporarily disable Norton360 while you are naming the new exe and using it - just disconnect your router, disable Norton - Paint away using the fixed Painter4. Thanks - you are a genius. -Dave

I have POSER 4. I don\'t have an installation directory for it. I simply used to run the program strait off the disc without installing it, and it used to work pefectly on my old crappy computer. All I used to do was click on the Executable file and it worked because I didn\'t have the option of installing it. Now when I pop the disc in and click on the EXE file this stupid \"Your out of memory...\" thing pops up. Can you please tell me how I can get Poser 4 running again with this \"FIX\" baring in mind that I DONT have an Installation Directory for it?

Oh, and if you are using Vista, you need to "Run as administrator" or you'll end up getting a "Painter5 has stopped working" error message. It might be best to just add a shortcut to the desktop.
Cheers, and good luck! (And thanks for the fix!)

I encountered the same problem as mentioned in the quote below ("Error: Couldn't back up painter5.exe to painter5.exe~" etc.) and it seems to centered around the security protocols in Windows Vista.
The solution for me was to reboot in Safe Mode with Command Prompt (reboot and hit the F8 key before Windows starts). Then follow the DOS Box instructions here.
In my case, it was as simple as typing: cd c:\program files\painter 5.0 and then, fixit painter5.exe.

Hi, I am an old Painter user, and have gotten the out of memory message. I read there is no fix needed for Painter 2, which I have. In fact I think it's the best version. (also have Painter 3 and the little version that comes with a Wacom tablet) I tried to load ver2 and the Wacom one (the Wacom one loaded but gave me the out of memory message) on my new computer with Vista and got a message it could not read the disk. The same thing happened when I tried to load Photoshop.
The drive does work, I opened a document from the drive. What a royal pain this is. I\'ve got thousands of dollars of programs I can\'t load.
I have a CalComp Drawing Board II (12\'X12\") I\'m going to try to get a driver loaded for, but if Painter can\'t be loaded, there is no point. I really don\'t want to have to pay almost $400 to purchase a new version of a program I love and already have.
Anyone have any idea what the problem is, or how it can be resolved.

I had a cd-rom copy of poser3 that installed fine on windows98.
With your patch , I was able to port Poser3 from windows98 to windowsXP. Otherwise I got the out of memory warning and couldn't even register the copy.
But your .exe is signaled as a trojan by Norton antivirus .

Like I\'ve said before, You are a life saver, youy patch help keep Art Dabbler going for the last several years when I upgraded to a computer with more than a Gig of Ram. I did contribute to your PayPal donation account.
Just recently both AVG 8 Free and Corporate Norton was deleting without asking saying the the Art Dabbler fix was a Trojan Horse Backdoor Agent.WRV
I couldn\'t believe it so I disabled anti-virus and reinstalled the fix. Everytime I started AV again it would delete it.
Of course since Corel bought then buried Art Dabbler, there is no support from them.
I finally figured out how to install the latest fix and IT WORKED! No anti-virus kicking out and Art Dabble is working again. Thanks
PS: I\'ve tried other programs, One Note, many art programs, but none I\'ve found will let you create a 100 blank page flip chart to give notes on to students. I can do it with Adobe Acrobat by converting a 100 page blank Word doc to Adobe but it\'s just not the same smoothness in writing. Does anyone else use a program to give notes on in class like I do?

I have tried this fix on Metacreations Art Dabbler on a Lenovo computer running Windows XP Pro SP3 version 2002. The program runs just fine, but I am having difficulty printing...the dialog box says \'sending art dabbler sketch to print spooler\" and the program freezes. We also are getting messages that there are memory problems and program crashes. Should I use a previous fix version?
I am also running it on an MPC transport, with XP Pro SP 2 Version 2002 with no problems.

COMMENT FROM GEERT> If you paid $260, then it was surely not to me. The reason why this fix exists is to help the unfortunate who have the problem you are having. Maybe you could try to complain with Corel who definitely have your money in their bankaccount... all fixes here are free of charge (but donations are appreciated of course).

Does the trojan actually do anything? I'm running Painter6 and I'm not so computer savvy as to understand half of the other fixes. I'd rather just use the generic, like I was before I got AVG, but I don't want to mess up my computer.
It didn't seem to cause any issues before. Will it now?
COMMENT FROM GEERT> There is NO trojan present in any of the fixes provided here. I can only assume AV software triggers the fix as a potential trojan because it does dynamic code injection to remove the problem. I would propose to install the latest fix (see home page and look for 3.0 fix), that fix uses binary modification and injection vs. dynamic code modifications, maybe that will keep AV software happy. By the way, the source code on the website will show you how to fix the problem, if you don't trust it, just download a microsoft compiler (free nowadays) and compile it yourself.

Another (good) way is :
http://dev.depeuter.org/corelpainter_fix.php#Fixing_it_myself
"Want a really cool fix (only for the brave) ?"
It very simple (not only for the brave) with UltraEdit software, you need only to modify one number in this Painter Classic dll :
ASI32_12.dll
... and this works !
... and no Trojan with this way !!
COMMENT FROM GEERT> Should not be necessary. A lot of people will notice that the specific bytesequence doesn't exist in their version of the ASI32_12.dll. Finding the correct bytesequences in every version of that dll will take a lot of reverse engineering, so that's why I coded up a generic fix. Try the 3.0 version of the fix (see home page), this may pass AV checkers

For your information. Your fix for the memory problem in Painter 5 worked fine from July 2007 till 15/8/08 under Windows versions up to XP. On 15/8/08, AVG antivirus (free version), after an update, suddenly declared it to be a 'Trojan horse BackDoor.Agent.UDQ'. I downloaded a new copy of the fix but as soon as it was unzipped, it got the same treatment.
I don't really want to amend the executable code so haven't decided what to do as yet.
However, our Toshiba laptop running Windows Vista & Norton seems quite happy to run Painter 5.0 without any fix. So that gives us another option.
COMMENT FROM GEERT> Try the 3.0 fix (see homepage). I can only say there are no viruses in the code, probably dynamic code injection techniques that being used trigger a virus signature...

hi,
i'm a big fan of Painter 5 and tried to install this patch to fix the 'not enough memory' error in XP. I've followed the instructions but New_Painter5 crashes on start-up. This time, the nature of the error is unspecified. When I click on problem details, it says:
Fault Module Name: ASI132_12.dll , Module Version: 12.0.0.0
I cannot do the second, hex fix you mention because the hex string you suggest replacing does not appear in my ASI132_12.dll.
Maybe these fixes require me to have version 12.1 of this file? If so, would somebody please send it to me (onlyforjeena@gmail.com).
Thanks

BRILIANT!!!! You are a life saver...I got ArtDabbler 2.1.2 to work on my 1 gig memory laptop, where I was getting an 'out of free memory' message. I unzipped the file to a folder on the desktop, and moved both files to the ArtDabbler file folder on my C drive. Renamed the exe file New_ArtDab...didn't need to add the .exe since I don't have Windows explorer set up to view the extensions (could this be a problem with folks who can't make it run?...if you don't normally see the .xxx extensions, and you rename a file with a .xxx extension, you will have a file whose actual name is new_artdab.exe.exe, which will not work). Nicely done...you've saved me...this is my most favorite program to work with my intermediate school students with, and I hated the thought that it wouldn't work anymore, considering that Corel is sitting on it and refuses to release or sell it (grrrr).

She was the one who discovered that it stopped working after I upgraded memory.
Our thanks to you.

IT'S ALIVE!!!
I've been using Painter5 for a decade. I purchased PIX to run on a new computer, but it's just not the same. THANK YOU for keeping Painter5 alive!
First unsuccessfully tried the PClassic fix before noticing the generic fix. Initially I couldn't get that to work either due to a Painter5.RSR error. Then I noticed a user comment about not including .exe in the file name, and it worked. IT'S ALIVE!!!
I thank you from the bottom of my Paypal account...

It is a relief to think, that there still are some humans who are not thinking only ab00t money :) and helps just the same.
I`m 18 , and studying drawing on my own (like a hobby) already for two years. Finally upgraded my System and realized that something is not good :)
I dabble a bit with programs, (only script actually >_>, but someday...) , so I knew that there is some compatability issues with memory range. Tryed to search for some .ini files, even tryed some debuggers (after 10min realized - what the heck, I need help).
...ok, went on frenzy with text...BTW Thank you.
Sys Info:
OS - WinXP Home
RAM - (the upgraded part)...now is 1,5 GB RAM ^^
Program - Art Dabbler 2.1 ___I can add some feedback - When renaming that "New_<ProgramName>.exe" , i didn`t use ".exe" . So it works for me if I leave "New_<ProgramName>" ...and that`s it.

This does neither work for "Art Dabbler" nor with "Poser 3". I get the same DOS screen like Andrew and Hermann.
I tried it on different Systems:
Athlon XP 2800+
2GB Corsair DDR RAM
512 MB Nvidia Geforce 6 (cant remember i guess 9600 os sthg)
second System:
Pentium Core2 Duo 6300
2GB Infineon DDR2 RAM
256 MB Nvidia 7600 GS (PCIe)
Got myself a Pentium 3 with 256 MB SDRAM to get rid of it.

Tried this with ArtDabdler; renamed fix to "New_Artdab" tried with and without ".exe" suffix. Just comes up with a DOS screen asking if I put the files in installation directory.
They are in the C:\Programfiles\Corel\Artdabbler folder along with Artdab.exe etc, but no joy. DLL is in same folder.
PC is AMD Athlon 64 3200+, 1GB memory, 160GB HDD.

Hi, I have Painter 6, well, I guess it's Painter 6.1 now, but it seems to crash after about half an hour of using it. The "illegal action" message comes up and it closes. I am an idiot with computers, so I don't know where to begin to fix this. Do I uninstall and re-install? It took me forever to find my serial number, so I'm ready to try this! Is there anything I can do that won't drive me insane?

Thanks for the patch. I used it to solve the problem with Painter 6.0.0. It worked well on one PC, but not the other where there is a problem. The program loads, but forces the colour quality back to low 8 bit. Do you have any idea why this happens? Both PCs are running XP Pro and have 1gb memory.

Thank you for your fix. When I installed Painter Classic three or four years ago, it executed properly. When I re-installed it on a computer with 1 GIG RAM, it failed. I set the paging file size < 1 GIG to fix the problem. Recently, I had to increase the paging file size and, of course, Painter Classic issued an error message. I searched for alternatives and found your fix. Presto. It works great!

Your zip patch worked like a charm. I will be sending a donation through PayPal.
Beginner tips: 1. I had to turn off pagefile to get Art Dabbler 2.13 to work, then I right clicked on the icon to find the installation directory.
2. When I unzipped into that folder, it buried the two files within folders, so I had to copy and paste them back to the original directory.
3. When re-naming, I had to leave the .exe off, just used Artdab NOT Artdab.exe. Now I'm happily running Art Dabbler on my new Dual Core XP Pro with 2 GIGS of Ram. YeeHaa! Thanks
I teach math and use this program all day every day. The sketchpad that provides multiple pages without opening a new file works great. I create a pad of 90 pages and use it until it's full. ArtRage didn't have this feature or any other program I can find. The pen is smooth and not pixelly. Too bad Corel bought it and buried it. That's one way to get rid of a superior product. ;-(

COMMENT FROM GEERT> I was not aware of the out of memory problem existing on Mac. If it does, you should be able to use easy unix tricks to override the problem function. Just use truss/ktrace/... to find the offending call and then override it using LD_LIBRARY_PATH manipulations.

Thanks, this enabled me to use old 5.5 Painter again after upgrading my box.to 1g of memory. My question is, if it's fooled into thinkin there's only 512 M of memory, then can it use a full gig of memory on your machine?
Thanks,
Richard
COMMENT FROM GEERT> Yes, it won't be a problem to use all available memory. The call to retrieve the amount of installed memory is only executed once and the results aren't kept within Painter. So in case Painter will run out of memory, it will be because the OS doesn't have any more memory left to give ... which will make you go a long way on recent systems.

Dear Geert,
I haven't been able to make it work in Art Dabbler 2.1. I have XP Home with 1GB RAM. I downloaded the file into the Corel Folder, unzipped the "generic_fix" folder, this became another folder titled "generic_fix" the 2 files inside were "intercept.dll & New_PClassic.exe" I renamed the New_PClassic.exe to new_artdab.exe - I then clicked on this file which then took me to the DOS secreen asking if I put the files in the directory.
I have tried several times, uninstalling & starting from scratch. I realise I am missing the point & would be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.
Kind regards Esther

COMMENT FROM GEERT> The installation directory is where the application is installed. The easiest way to find this is by going to the start menu, go to the Dabbler launch button, and then press the right mouse and select properties. In "Target" you will see the installation directory.

Hi, I was going through the information that you have presented in the fix for "not enough Memory" for corel Art Dabbler. As I am not familiar with computer programing or binery language. Do you have step by step insolutions explaining where the program files are what to do to open them and how to copy the patch into them. Is there a self installing patch that takes out the programming skills required approach?
Thanking you Kindly for your time and assistance

The generic fix works fine with Artdabbler 2.1.3 (currently being supplied packaged with some Trust tablets in UK). I have found the tablet software is rubbish- keeps causing my PC to hang - but the Artdabbler program is quite useful and works well with my Wacom and mouse.
However when I upgraded my RAM to 1.5G to my surprise I got the message "Not Enough Free Memory" when I tried to open Artdabbler.
Fixed by your patches - seems fine. I used New_Artdab as the exe name (deduced from establishing the shortcut target) and set up a new shortcut to open the prog.

I had the same problem with Painter 5 and Painter 3D, so I tried the "generic" fix and it works for both programs. I was not satisfied to settle for a patch however, because I wanted to know the cause of the problem!!! This is a "memory size problem" so I started reducing the size of my page file to see what would happen. With 1 gig of RAM installed the maximum useable page file size ended up at 768 meg. Above that Painter does not work. I don't have 2 gig of RAM to test this, but it would follow that a 1500 meg page file should work if you have that much RAM. It would appear to be a matter of keeping a ratio below 1.5 to 1 for the programs to function. (For those that do not know -- a page file is hard drive space used by the OS as though it were RAM. You can find it under: system properties/advanced/performance settings/advanced/virtual memory.)
If for some reason you need a large page file, then the best solution I have seen is the "generic" work-around. Very nice solution Geert!!

The first time I tried the patch I was a little impatient and I closed the program before it started up completely. After that I was unable to start the program until I uninstalled the program and then reinstalled it. There may have been other issues involed including my attempts to try and run it in compatibility modes and what not... Anyways. I recommend that this patch be installed on a fresh install of Painter Classic and if it takes a while to start up the first time... WAIT! It took my laptop (1.2 GHz) 2 minutes to start the program but now that it is up I can save and load just fine! I even am able to open files that are saved in Corel Painter IX! I am so happy! I bought this program at a thrift store for $2 and I am thinking I will replace Painter IX because I do not use it so much. I will likely eBay my Painter IX. GEERT You are a hero!

I used this on Painter 3D 1.0, which always worked fine until I upgraded to a gig of ram. Works like a charm! Thanks for saving a useful little app!

Painter 6.1, just added another gig of RAM to my computer (now 2gigs) now Painter is giving the error Tiles: Out of Tiles. Oh, what I wouldn't do to get the Out of Memory error. If anyone has gotten past this please send an email to rogfaNOSPAM@yahoo.com (remove NOSPAM). Thanks!

2. '/fastdetect' => '/fastdetect /maxmem:1022' modify
3. New_Painter61.exe
4. paint 6.1 Run!
Thank you very much!

I'm failed.
win XP, 2G RAM, painter 6.1 and it works
errer messege "Tiles: Out of Tiles"
ps. Thank you for your effort.^^
Comment from Geert: This "Out of Tiles" error is not related to the memory fix, but is most likely related to another conflicting program. Using Google on that specific error message will probably help.

Hi,
I have Painter Classic and the fix did not work for me. I also tried the patch but could not locate the byte line (c7 45 etc) to make the change to. I have both files in the install directory titled "Painter". Any suggestions? I am running XP Home w/1G RAM. I don't get the error message anymore and the program attempts to open but freezes before it completly loads.
Thanks,
Dick
Comment from Geert : You are the first who has mentioned this problem. I can only assume there is something else that is causing this problem. If you have some experience in program tracing or debugging you can try to find out on which call the program is hanging ... sorry the fix didn't help

Thank You so much for this fix......I was forced into upgrading to windows xp and my beloved Painter Classic would not work for me on it. I use it for all my digital 'fine' art, so I was quite devastated!. I was angry and frustrated about it until I stumbled upon your site through Yahoo search. I followed your instructions and the program is working fine.
Again thank you so very very much, I can now continue 'creating and painting' using Painter Classic!

... ok i stole that painter5 somewhere like 2 yrs ago... I had it working in a pIII system with 256mb ram. so worked nice.. was one of my favs.. but then i built my computer with 2gb of ram.. then there was the problem you know... i was like ?wtf... then started running some wheels about the problem.. yeah was about the memory, but im a lazy ass to decompile or to work into the problem... i tried metacreations website but found that those guys went out of business because i stole the program; but come on.. they should had at least told customers that the (#*@$*# program wasnt going to work if we add more memory... so i left that thing apart and looked for options.. i found some good tools, but i wanted painter5, why? because im an idiot and i just wanted painter5, i started the search about it hopefully some hardworking guy had found out what the problem was and made a fix... and voila!!!! there you go i found you at a forum :).. i dont remember where was it but it doesnt ($*#@&^ matter which one was it the thing is that i finally found a fix :D... i downloaded the files... was painter classic not painter5... shit!.. I thought..well maybe this guy could share painter five.. but still it was going to take too long to download but i kept reading and i had just to rename the exe file, i did.. but... but... yeah didnt' work... still i was ?wtf... i was about to curse you.. yeah thing that i dont usually do, just when i get mad.. then i went one more time downloaded the file again renamed the file just copy and paste.. and voila!!!!! yeeah baby :D.. it worked... mm just a little dll error about a SPROF32.DLL file not found.... anyway just clicked ok and worked :P.... thanks man... :D.. PD. remember next time a dog bites you keep in mind i wished for that :D hehehe. You're the man!!!

A wonderful testimony to the power of individual initiative and the ubiquity of the NET! I fixed Painter Classic and ArtDabbler

I want to thank you for this little great utility. I tested it with Painter 6 and Fontographer 4.1 (both have the >1GB problem) and it worked fine.
Thank you again.

I just wanted to drop you a line and say thank you for posting this fix to the painter program. Ive been dealing with this problem for a long time by just leaving out my extra stick of RAM : / but i downloaded your fix and it works, so thank you!
p.s. I'd like to note for you that I'm running Painter 6.1, so your general patch does work with 6.1; I just chanced the .exe file to New_Painter61.exe

BILLIANT - thank you so much. Now I know why my old Painter Classic stopped working a couple of machines ago. Wacom are still handing Painter out with their Graphics tablets, theres going to be a lot more frustrated people. Are Corel Not bothered ?
